WordCamp is the name given to a series of low-key, community-organized conferences centered on the WordPress personal publishing platform. These events are organized, paid for, and attended by local WordPress communities in accordance with guidelines published at WordCamp.org and the principles of the WordPress Foundation/the WordPress.org open source project. These events are not under the direction of Automattic, the parent company behind WordPress.com.
The first WordCamp was held in San Francisco in 2006, and each subsequent year has brought growth in the number of events and cities in which it is organized. As of 2010, there have been WordCamps on every continent except Antarctica, with many thousands of attendees overall.
